From Baggot Street to Merion: Catherine’s Dream and the Continuing Mission of Mercy
Mary Reynolds, RSM
September 26, 2026
As we prepare to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the opening of the House of Mercy on Baggot Street in 2027, we gather with Sr. Mary Reynolds, RSM, to remember the people, places, and dreams that have carried the story of Mercy across generations and across the ocean.
Together, we will revisit Catherine McAuley’s dream of a home where people in need could find welcome, education, care, and hope. We will remember the role of the Merion community—including our own Mary Trainer—and the generosity that helped establish the Mercy Institute and carry Catherine’s vision into a new place.
We will look back at the last 30+ year story of the House of Mercy on Baggot Street, consider its continuing significance, and hear about the current renovation as we look toward the bicentennial celebration in 2027.
But this is more than a story about buildings and history. Catherine’s original vision began with lay people responding together to the needs of their time. From that beginning came the development of religious life and, today, a growing and increasingly diverse global Mercy family of Sisters, Associates, Companions, and lay people.
Through conversation, stories, and reflection, we will consider how Catherine’s dream continues to unfold—from Baggot Street to Merion and into the world today.
Wherever we find ourselves—in our communities, ministries, families, workplaces, or neighborhoods—how are we called to be a Mercy presence in the world? And what might Catherine’s dream look like through us?
Come for conversation, memories, history, and a celebration of the continuing story of Mercy.
**This program will take place at the Sisters of Mercy Motherhouse, 515 Montgomery Avenue, Merion, PA 19066. You are also invited to attend their vigil mass at 4:00 pm.
